Sign the Petition to Urge Obama to Support UN Action Against Israeli Settlements

Source : AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR PALESTINIAN EQUAL RIGHTS

Dear Mr. President,

On January 19, 2011, Lebanon introduced a resolution in the United Nations Security Council reaffirming that Israeli settlements are “illegal” and constitute “a major obstacle to the achievement of a just, lasting and comprehensive peace” in the Middle East.  I strongly urge your Administration to support this resolution.

Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention clearly states that the transfer of a civilian population to occupied territory is illegal under international law.  Despite this, about 500,000 Israeli settlers live illegally in the West Bank with the support of Israel’s government.  Israeli settlements sever Palestinian communities, damage Palestinian livelihood and violate Palestinian rights.

Since the Carter administration, the United States has stated its opposition to Israeli settlement construction. I urge you to back up American statements with action by allowing the United Nations Security Council to reaffirm the illegality of Israeli settlements and stand against the construction of future settlements.

Sincerely,
